Postage Stamp was a mandatory part of the application for registration of a company in Nepal. In fact, it is not only for the registration of the company but for most of the government applications, be it simple handwritten or special forms. Thumb rule is no postage stamp no registration.
You must be wondering is it in addition to an application fee or registration fee levied by the government. And, the answer is yes. This is on top of the regular service fee charged. One can find the postage stamp easily in the nearby shops or cafeteria where such government offices are situated.
However, with the Companies Act, 2063, and its directives issued in 2072, the provision of furnishing postage stamp along with application has been repealed. What does it mean? One is no longer required to buy a postage stamp and place it on top of the application or form for registration of the company.
Let us talk about the Postage Stamp itself. Do you know when was it first printed in Nepal? Well, The first Nepalese postage stamps were issued in April 1881 as a set of three which were valued at one anna, two annas, and four annas, inscribed as the Kingdom of Gorkha in Nepali script. Currently, Nepal Government through the Postal Act, 2019 B.S. (1963 A.D) has all the authority to arrange and circulate different types and denominations of a postage stamp. As provisioned in the Act, it can carry out the following activities:
(a) To fix the selling rate of a postal stamp,
(b) To fix the category of postage articles for the purpose of the payment of postage charge and other fees,
(c) To fix the condition whereby perforated, torn, distorted and other such stamps which may not be brought into circulation,
(d) To regulate the keeping, sale, distribution, and use of postage stamp,
(e) To fix the terms and conditions for an individual, who is permitted to sell the postage stamp, while selling the postage stamp,
(f) To fix the duty and remuneration for the individual selling postage stamp,
(g) To circulate International Reply Coupon and fix its exchange rate,
(h) To sell the stamps received from the United Nations organization for the sale.
